Most organisations use multiple training suppliers to satisfy their skills needs, but how do you manage your budget without a mountain of administration? One solution is to outsource training provision to a single prime supplier, but many don't want to hitch their fortunes to a single company, nor do they want to lose contact with the providers who have got to know their organisation over many years.

The alternative is training automation through the use of the Enterprise Study Network (ESN). ESN is an independent e-commerce system that allows product offerings from many providers to be brought together and offered through a single portal to prospective learners.

ESN offers:

  • A single consolidated electronic catalogue from the suppliers of your choice
  • Up-to-the-minute scheduling and place availability information
  • The ability to automate booking processes and configure your own branded portal
  • A fully customisable procurement process
  • Comprehensive reporting on training spend and an evaluation system to analyse supplier performance
  • Better control, with all procurement going through a single system
  • A drastic reduction in training administration

"It's simple, user friendly and flexible enough to customise to our needs," says Gouaux.

"It's extremely invaluable in saving time and in effectiveness as well as efficiency. I wish I'd implemented it earlier!"

Enterprise Study is neither a reseller nor a broker of training. Rather our ESN system sets a standard for communication that can provide access to the course schedules of the training providers of your choice through a fully-functional e-commerce solution. You retain the commercial relationships with your suppliers; you keep control.

Users like the ability to search through online catalogue information to find the right course and date that meets their needs. What they don't like is having to search different databases with different interfaces and then having to go through a separate bookings approval process. ESN brings everything together through one easy-to-use web-based interface.

ESN runs on central servers with secure and fast access provided to your staff and managers over the Internet. This means that you do not need to deploy your own hardware or install any software. Up-front and ongoing costs are therefore low, and implementation is rapid. Your particular portal will be specific to your organisation, is fully customisable and can be easily linked to any existing intranet site. Should you want to, you can also add your own internal courses or other training offerings.

Who's using it?

Many of the UK's top training providers are already members of ESN and more are joining all the time.

The Institute for IT Training (IITT) is the latest prestigious organisation to adopt ESN to provide the portal on their web site that allows IITT members and others to book from a wide range of courses.

Atos Origin is a €5 billion company with a major ongoing training need that adopted ESN nearly a year ago. "I find it ludicrous to have people doing administration work," says Marie-Pierre Gouaux, Learning and Development Manager and the IITT's Training Manager of the Year for 2005. "It's not a profession - the people doing it are just pushing paper, bored out of their brains - and there's no added value."

Their ESN front end is linked to the Atos Origin University intranet site to allow the automatic display of a portfolio of courses from the company's ten preferred training vendors. Staff can now make bookings directly onto a course which is later charged against their cost centre code. The system automatically sends an email to the person's manager seeking approval and then links directly to the supplier to make the booking, all without administrator intervention.

The result is major cost savings which have already paid for the investment several times over. "It's simple, user friendly and flexible enough to customise to our needs," says Gouaux. "It's extremely invaluable in saving time and in effectiveness as well as efficiency. I wish I'd implemented it earlier!"
